Racism = “Nonsense”

It’s coming from Obama, so you know it’s good. It’s a PC-approved position, loaded with wholesome well-intentionedness. MSNBC:

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama called criticism of Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor “nonsense” Friday, telling NBC News that while Sotomayor would probably rephrase her eight-year-old comments on race, she would be “a good judge.”

“I’m sure she would have restated it,” the president said. “But if you look in the entire sweep of the essay that she wrote, what’s clear is that she was simply saying that her life experiences will give her information about the struggles and hardships that people are going through.

Yeah, but that isn’t how racism gotcha works. Come on, Barry. Whatever, it’s good to know we are setting a new standard. Remember, next time any interest groups or grandstanding do-gooders seek to derail a nomination, destroy someone’s career, etc., because someone said something stupid or offensive or was just taken out of context, something dumb and/or ill-considered like …

 “I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life.”

… it’s just nonsense.

It’s a little troubling, though, that someone who sits in judgment on others, sometimes about racial matters, making remarks about race and judgment, with power over liberty, property and even life, should be held to a lesser standard than, say, editorial cartoonists, radio talk show hosts, sportscaster, comedians and even rank pols have been.

Reynolds, looking on the other bright side, is pleased to see that Obama at least agrees it’s the kind of statement that needs restating.

via HotAir, White House spokesman Gibbs says Sotomayor’s choice of words was “poor.” Yeah, but what about her choice of sentiments? As a professional scribbler, I’d have to say the word choice was fine. It is a very well phrased remark, points for clarity, but I’d go with “not wise,” and “showed poor judgment” on content.

Gateway re getting ahead and hating people.

Protein Wisdom on the Sotomayor/Dealergate nexus.

Outrage from the left! No, not for excusing racism. For backing down on it! Digby, mad as hell, raises a hullabaloo.

Here’s a good one. FireDogLake wants to throw lefty racism apologists Lanny Davis and Rachel Maddow under the bus! Go join the GOP, racemongers!

Different, yet related, via Hyscience: “It’s hard to get to the truth when you’re being lied to so eloquently.”
