Happy Day!

In Iran, as the people begin to figure out they are living under a vile dictatorship, those who might not have previously noticed the exclusion of candidates, closing of newspapers, arrest of dissidents, crackdown on protesting schoolteachers, etc.

Happy day in the United States, too. Theoretically. The president hoped the Mullah-A’jad regime would change, and it did! Into a more embarrassingly naked dictatorship. It’s not like mullah-approved Mousavi represented change from mullah politics as usual any more than, heck, Obama did from raging DC hypocrisy and porkulism, though the weird combination of Carterist foreign policy and Bush GWOTism is different.

But theoretically, the idea of good-faith negotiations with nuke-lusting raging anti-Semitic sponsors of terrorism who rig their already rigged elections is out the window, right? Theoretically, because who knows. Diplomatically, presidentially, politically speaking, the cat’s still got his tongue.

Daniel Pipes with some similar upbeat thoughts: “Ahmadinejad remains the lunatic face of Iran to the world … Ahmadinejad symbolizes the rejection of Barack Obama’s overtures … a slap in the face of the American president’s pro-Islamist policies … Ahmadinejad remains in charge of the Iranian economy, which he is progressively wrecking, thereby reducing the country’s capabilities to make mischief abroad …

I dunno about that last one. Nukes vs butter debate in Iran? And terrorism is cheap, that’s why it’s so popular. But Pipes makes the point that, despite Obama’s lack of leadership, it could be a turning point. He wonders though, what kind of game Khamenei might be playing in handing A’jad the win in this “selection.”

Politico, hurtfully: So much for that warm, fuzzy, expanding “Obama effect.”

JPost: Obama admin still determined to press ahead with mullah talks, though some admin voices suggest pandering to dictators looks bad.

Bloomberg: White House “continue to monitor the entire situation closely, including reports of irregularities.” Secretary of State Clinton: “We hope that the outcome reflects the genuine will and desire of the Iranian people.” Bloomberg calls that an Obama admin undetered from engaging Iran. Sounds a little more like deer in the headlights, though.

NYT: Pressing ahead despite palpable disappointment in the White House, where they hoped talks with Mullah-lite would look better.

I dunno, sounds more to me like they are still trying to figure which way the wind is blowing, which end is up. Which means there still is hope, though not necessarily much, that the naked election grab in Iran could be a happy day, the kind of last straw that would mean real change for Iran and for everyone who is threatened by the Iranian regime in the Middle East, the world and the United States.

Here’s a odd one. Trudy Rubin at Philly Inquirer: The Iranian election shows that by pandering, Obama has made the world a better place. At least I think that’s what she’s trying to say.

Hate to be a wet blanket, but I see an Ahmadinejad emboldened, with a Mullah rubber stamp on his ruinous and vile domestic and foreign policy actions and statements. I don’t see anything good for for Iraq, for the Gulf, for Afghanistan, for Israel.

Friedman, meanwhile, needs to learn how to write faster. He’s a little behind the curve with his “Winds of Change?” column.

Iran-related commentary roundup at Memeorandum, RealClearPolitics.

Riehl: #CNNFail. Threatswatch, “Iranian Courage.” Lawhawk, A’jad cements control. Legal Insurrection: No hugs for mullahs! HotAir: senior US official, election rigged, no worries. Malkin, to borrow a line but none of the Obamism from Friedman, “Winds of Change.” Gateway, “Madness,” and more vidProtein Wisdom would like to see some Iraqi reaction. Stay tuned, the Iraqis have as much or more reason to care as anyone. Powerline on Obama’s criminally useful idiocy. The Other McCain with a Iran news aggregator endorsement likes Not Tucker Carlson as your go-to place. Hey, Other resembles that Not!

In other business, North Korea warns of nuclear war! Yeah, well, Kim can talk but if he doesn’t watch it he’s going to find himself staring down the barrel of a really stern UN Security Council resolution.
