Huge Anglo-Saxon Gold Hoard Found

Ancestral loot located, under a farmer’s field in Staffordshire. Been wondering where that stuff was. BBC

The Staffordshire Hoard contains about 5kg of gold and 2.5kg of silver, making it far bigger than the Sutton Hoo discovery in 1939 when 1.5kg of Anglo-Saxon gold was found near Woodbridge in Suffolk.

Leslie Webster, former keeper at the British Museum’s Department of Prehistory and Europe, said: “This is going to alter our perceptions of Anglo-Saxon England as radically, if not more so, as the Sutton Hoo discoveries.

“(It is) absolutely the equivalent of finding a new Lindisfarne Gospels or Book of Kells.”

Yeah, that’s great. As an Anglo-Saxon, I’d just like to say, that’s mine, and I want it. Hey, while we’re on the subject, I would also like federal authority to set up a casino somewhere on my tribal lands, like right here, in Plymouth County, Massachusetts. Historically big tribe controlled lots of land.* Also, seeing as my son is descended from some Nantucket Anglo-Saxons, Celts and Iberians whose traditions included hunting whales, I think we might want to start doing that, too. Because it’s traditional. Very important to our people.

In other Anglo-Saxon treasure trove-related  business, notable baubles include:

(a) England. The Roman Britons, as the empire was collapsing and Celtic barbarians were breathing downtheir necks, hired Saxon barbarians in a sort of fight-fire-with-fire strategy. The Saxons showed up, liked what they saw, wrote home. Next thing you know the place is rotten with Angles, Saxons and Jutes.

(b) North America, Australia, India and other parts of Asia and Africa. The Asian and African bits were eventually given back, but the Anglosphere remains the greatest Anglo-Saxon treasure of them all. Given of freely.

(c) The body of English literature, learning and invention. Also given of freely, where not covered by patent or copyright. You’re welcome.

* True story: I was talking to a Wampanoag tribal official some years back, and he talked about hanging around with some Sioux as part of AIM when he was in college in the 1970s. They were sizing each other up, and one of the Sioux said to him, “So, you speak your tribal language?” The Wampanoag replied, in English, “I’m speaking it.”  He went on to explain that his people were the first front, had welcomed, fought and adapted to the English, surviving the onslaught, long before the Sioux even knew they existed.

    Mr. Crittenden,
I’m an 11 generation American…my family came through Salem around 1635…from East Anglia, England…does this mean I can get a cut of the trove? How about a seat on the board of your Casino….?
