A Worcester, Massachusetts, man will do 18 months for taking another man’s hot dog at gunpoint, and eating it. Worcester Telegram

About 6:45 p.m. Aug. 12, a man was sitting under a tree eating hot dogs in Elm Park when Mr. Judd walked up to him, police reports said. Believing Mr. Judd was drunk, the man heard Mr. Judd mumble something incoherent. Then Mr. Judd blurted out what he wanted.

“Eat that other dog?” Mr. Judd asked.

“Yes,” the man replied.

Lifting up his shirt, Mr. Judd showed what appeared to be a handgun, the police reports said.

“I’m going to eat it,” Mr. Judd said.

Police reports said Mr. Judd grabbed the hot dog from the victim and began to chow down.
“In doing so mustard had spilled onto the suspect’s shirt,” Officer Joseph Francese wrote.
Police began searching for the suspect and found a man matching the robber’s description walking near Elm Street and Park Avenue.

The sentence imposed by the judge came from a recommendation made by the prosecutor. Mr. Judd was originally charged with armed robbery, but he pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of larceny from a person.

Charges of carrying a dangerous weapon and resisting arrest were dismissed.

OK, technically he’s just going away for taking the hot dog … larceny … not for doing so while menacing the wiener’s rightful owner with a gun or for the additional charge they could have laid of “possession of stolen property,” which would be the “eating it” part. That might have been harder to prove, though, the mustard on the shirt notwithstanding.

I’d say he got off easy. Traditionally there’s a lot of sympathy for people reduced to stealing food. But taking a man’s lunch at gunpoint … it’s just low. Anyone who would do that is a bad hombre.

They start with hot dog thievery, and the next thing you know… is the collapse of civilization.
