LIED

LIED

There’s a lot of Shepard Fairey posts out there. I like the Deceiver.com one. “Shepard Fairey Is A Liar.” Simple, to the point. In fact, it’s almost like the “HOPE” of Shepard Fairey plagiarizing perjurist posts, captures the true Fairey spirit iconically.

News via NYT. But because the Shepard Fairey story is a sort of iconic American charlatan’s tale, and really should be viral, ubiquitous and iconic, plastered everywhere, here’s your roundup:

Riehl: “Talk about poetic justice.”

Moe Lane: “Make you wonder what the AP has … ” Hmm. Lots of lawyers and apparently the high ground in terms of accuary on this one.

Fernandez: Rip-off artist is a liar!?!

TNOYF: “HACK”

Moderate Voice:

I’m curious to know whether Obama will get a question about the portrait at his next press conference. He bears no responsibility for what happened, of course. Yet on a symbolic level, Fairey’s behavior represents an ironic indictment of the borderline personality cult embraced by so many of the President’s admirers.

I dunno. I think they could haul Obama in on “aiding and abetting.” Or “accessory before the fact.” Anyway, I’d rather hear some questions about the NFL giving Limbaugh the bum’s rush.

Althouse:

The copyright issue itself should remain the same, and it’s an important one indeed. It’s a damned shame that the banner for expansive fair use is being carried by someone who was dishonest and who tried to play the legal system. Why is he admitting his deception now? Presumably, he knew the manipulations would come to light one way or the other, and it was a strategic decision to reveal it this way.

Obviously, this is also an occasion to craft jokes analogizing the Fairey mess to what the subject of the poster is doing, with all the usual sarcasm over the word “hope.” Not that any of that mess is poor Obama’s fault.

Good point re copyright debate. Why is he admitting his deception now? In the HOPE he’ll to dodge a perjury charge. Re Obama’s culpability, I dunno.

Tim Blair: “Keep hopin,’ Shep.” Notes Fairey claimed Obama camp encouragement, which complicates the fair use and culpability arguments somewhat. Maybe AP should sue Obama, too.

Commentary:

Whatever. Until all the legal eyes are dotted and tees crossed, you might want to pass the time reading “The Art of Obama Worship” for the truth of how reverence for Barack Obama has turned contemporary artists into little more than evangelists for that most fickle of gods — change.

Different, yet homophonic. Actually funnier that the iconic Shepard artist being full of it, and a lot more artistic. via Don Surber, a palate cleanser: “Extreme Shepherding.”
