… nigh. The irony is, if it happens, it won’t be the American cowboys or ex-Soviet thugs, or Iranian mullahs or al Qaeda or the Chi-coms, or even Dr. Evil who blows us all to smithereens. It’ll be a bunch of pointy-headed Eurowienies in lab coats on the Swiss-French border who are looking for the “God particle” and [...]

The following was produced at the request of Norm Geras and originally ran at his site in November 2006 as a book review, though it was as much an ode to war and an exploration of the experience as anything.  Today, on the 193rd anniversary, here’s ”The Battle,” with some art and links added:

the dissident frogman, intruding. Bien le bonjour Mesdames et Messieurs, and non I’m not really a mime you know.
I understand the temptation to paint Brigitte Bardot as yet another example of the crushing of dissent brought upon the West by the conquering armies of Islam, or in this case their voluntary operatives on the Left [...]

Protestor-dodge torch relay in Paris, bridge-scaling in SF, where the torch is due tomorrow. French/Greens protest you can get behind. Oddly, the torch was doused and bused for its protection five times. In most French protests, that would have been five torched buses.

UPDATE: I spoke too soon. French doing what French do best. Retreating.
The French, (who had appeared to be) slowly emerging as responsible foreign policy players, actually have a pretty good idea:  Show up for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Not our fault or the athletes’ fault the IOC hopped in bed with a(nother) wretched dictatorship. Just shun the [...]

Mon ami le Frogman has done me the tremendous honor of refering to me as Gaius Julius Crittenden … apparently a mocking reference to my efforts to document the Gallic War … this most recent lasted about five minutes, so documenting it really wasn’t hard work. Also I wrote it in English and used Babelfish for the Frog [...]

First, it was the suave, debonair and sophisticated Dissident Frogman.*
Then, it was Sarkozy, a Crusader and Zionist cowboy, who professes to love America.
Now, the French examine themselves and consider this matter of arrogance. I don’t know what is happening over there. But I could see myself beginning to like these people:

Sarkozy’s a literate, sensitive cowboy. He does say some of that distasteful cowboy stuff sometimes. But Schumer likes the way he looks in a cowboy suit.  He wouldn’t do anything crazy like go charging off half-cocked after that Sioux war party up on the hill.  He’s one erudite cowboy. [...]
