In the runup to HBO’s The Pacific launch this weekend, you may want to check out Auburn University’s Eugene B. Sledge Collection collection. Here’s vid of a lecture re same. (nod to Auburn on the photo of Sledge above, taken shortly after Okinawa, aged 21 and about 100 years old. Thanks, Aaron.)

It’s the battle of the HD channels. Smithsonian Channel HD has its own offering for Veterans Day. “Apocalypse: The Second World War.” Good title … WWII was about as close to apocalypse as our world has seen this side of the Black Death … also looks like good viewing, making the usual claims of previously unseen archives-scoured footage. With noted lefty [...]

Big History Channel event, two hours a night, Nov. 15-19, “WWII in HD” promises to ”change the way the world sees this defining conflict.” Previews* and details at History.com, where they say they combed the archives for a lot of largely unseen footage and digitally cranked it up to HD standards.

My local radio talk-show pal Michael Graham questions whether its a hoax. How could anyone plan anything that would fly the way that did and attract the kind of attention that did? And what kind of gain could he possibly expect?
I dunno. The guy’s showing all the signs of being a full-throttle crackpot visionary. He claims [...]

I’m not a big fan of charging people for emergency services. But when someone accidentally launches a 20-foot balloon he constructed to conduct lighter-than-air commuting research, and having failed to keep track of their six-year-old, report said tyke is aloft, forcing the local international airport to postpone flight operations, military helicopters to be launched and emergency chase vehicles [...]

My big question, does this mean Bill Clinton is going to start doing monologues? Variety: Letterman admits sex with staffers, reveals extortion attempt.
OK, the David Letterman Top Tens are piling up. Here’s Treacher’s. Here’s mine, posted on Twitter last night while the show was being aired. So I’m claiming the first:

Two from MEMRI: An Egyptian cleric on the correct way to beat your wife. Meanwhile, Hamas TV scratches another kiddie show character. Assud the Rabbit won’t be down for falafel.* Stop me if you’ve heard either of those ones before. The wife-beating thing pretty much speaks for itself. It’s all about traditional, violent, 7th century family values. I don’t [...]

Interesting News Items has the scoop, so real it could be true. Except if Boston’s public TV powerhouse was doing it, it would be “Kwanzaa with Bill and Jerry.”
Malkin with an Ayers update that apparently isn’t a spoof, but looks like one. FSU studnet govt votes $5,000 to bring Bill to campus, while community organizers in Illinois [...]
