A friend turned me onto CrossFit some time ago by giving me one of their Workouts of the Day. This is where you should start if you want to understand the website. The WOD is the basics. Look at the videos that illustrate the WOD and forget the rest. Until tomorrow.

The workout was doing lunges with a 40lb barbell, held over my head, for 50 ft. Then 20 burpees; then repeat five times. For time.

After that, I had had a full leg workout, plus cardio. I never made it to 210 burpees, if you're wondering. Ten was all I could handle.

But, I'm old. I'd take too many years to get up to speed and by that time I'll be dead anyway. So I'll just stick with my old weight training/cardio routine. It gets me through the night.

Absolutely right, Rebecca. Well said.

I think Palin might be the first to agree with your sentiments. She seems quite sincere about simply wanting to make a difference (rather than being focused on the power). That's one of the things that's so refreshing about her.

I think it's terrific that she's setting out to help in as many 2010 races as possible. She says she'll help any candidate who asks, at any level of government, if that person believes in fiscal responsibility and small government. (That's from the NRO interview.) Somebody tell Scott Brown!

I'm only on page 81 of the book. I like it. It's uplifting to read about her upbringing and her accomplishments. Hard work, firmly held values, and bulldog tenacity.

Her book emphasizes the difference between party machine politics and political office earned and held by individuals. The story of her insistence on gaining office via the latter method is very instructive. Not to mention timely. Let's hope it's the wave of the future.

Growing up, she was very much influenced by Reagan when he came on the scene. I found it cheering to read about that. She's only 45 years old--it's interesting and heartening to think of her as representative of a next generation of leaders.

Unless things get significantly more chaotic, I don't think Palin should run for president in 2012, and it's not because I don't like her, because I do; I think she would be vastly more competent than the narcissistic empty suit we have now. It's just that she currently presents a target as big as GWB did, and the last thing this country needs is more of the ugliness that has prevailed over the last nine years. If we can't separate respect for the most powerful office in the world from the personality inhabiting it, we'll only ensure more polarization, more extremist lunacy, and more chaos.

That said, depending on whom we do elect in 2012 (surely not President Obendover), she could be a viable candidate in 2016 or 2020. In any case, she is a remarkably powerful voice for the right just as she is.

"Cross fit" for me means doing leg lifts and knee bends at the kitchen counter and lifting dumbbells (hey, I can lift 25 lb weight-added dumbbells at least four times apiece) on alternate days, and 30 minutes on the elliptical at tension 6 every day. Sometimes I walk the neighborhood for 45-60 min., which is harder than it sounds because our little town is all up and down. All this is to keep my heart pumping for a few years longer, and to buy me a little more mojo for the kayaking next summer. It's old geezer stuff, but I'm happy with it.

Damon Linker calls out the Dish and other Palin obsessives:

Is Andrew admitting to being obsessive? Also, corollary, has any gay man ever admitted to being so neurotically spooked by a heterosexual woman?

As for this:

So why do I waste any time even mocking these people?

Because, your other cogent arguments besides, these people can and will do a lot of damage before their lunacy becomes apparent to the majority of people. Keep mocking, JC. It's one of our most potent weapons.

Hmm. Whose advice to take? McChrystal or Biden? Mm, tough choice.

[/major sarcasm]

My disgust for this president and his administration has already filled my digustic tank. I can't generate any more, lest it overflow.

As a fellow Brit in the USA , Sullivan's comments are usually an embarrassment, but I really love it when he gets his Palin freak on! She's managed to annoy the snot-nosed liberal establishment even more than Boosh, and that is itself worth seeing.
